We grabbed a quick chat with Ahmed Khattab, Support Worker at Holland House and winner of our Northern Healthcare 2022 Rising Star Award! Ahmed tells us about his experience at Northern Healthcare and how he felt being nominated for an award.
I started at Northern Healthcare in July 2021.
As a Support Worker, my main responsibilities include supporting our residents to lead fulfilling and independent lives, building rapport with our residents, developing and maintaining professional and trusting relationships with them and learning about their specific needs.
I really liked the Northern Healthcare ethos “putting people first”, and the enhanced supported living model which includes everything a resident would need on their path to independence.
. Although every day is completely different in this role, some of my day-to-day duties include supporting our residents with medications, attending appointments, cooking meals, and accessing the community. A day can also include fun, engaging activities such as supporting residents out to the cinema, playing sports, or simply going out for a coffee.
Our residents can sometimes display challenging behaviours which is expected when working with individuals with mental health conditions. These situations can be managed well by following the procedures and policies in place and remaining calm.
What I like the most about this role is how rewarding it is when you see how much of a difference you can make in someone’s life.
Last Easter we had an egg hunt all around Holland House, it was one of the most fun days I had during my time at Northern Healthcare.
Rewarding, varied, and collaborative.
It felt awesome and I’m grateful to have won this award.
The staff are very supportive and made me feel welcomed when I first joined. Even if you have never worked in a mental health setting before, full training is provided, and you will get all the support you need.
