We took the opportunity to grab a quick chat with our Northern Healthcare Support Worker of the Year 2022 award winner, Jade Gadd from Grainger House, to find out about her experience at Northern Healthcare and how she felt about winning the award! Here’s what she had to say…
I joined the Northern Healthcare team in March 2020, just before the Covid-19 pandemic hit and the first lockdown was implemented.
I work with residents to help them live a fulfilled and happy life, whilst ensuring they live as independently as possible. I work closely with colleagues and external professionals to ensure this. I support our residents with day-to-day activities such as budgeting, meal preparation and domestic tasks.
When I applied for Support Worker roles, Northern Healthcare stood out because on their website they promote person centred care, which I thought some other companies lacked. When I was offered a job here at Northern Healthcare and another place, I accepted the role with Northern Healthcare straight away.
Everyday is different when working at Northern Healthcare. The Team Leader will set out tasks for the Support Workers but apart from that everything else is resident based. We encourage our residents to participate in activities, and support them with daily living. This can include: cooking, shopping, cleaning, and attending appointments.
It can be challenging when you see residents not getting the support they need from external professionals.
I think supporting residents to achieve things they never thought they could achieve, and also seeing their reaction when they reach a goal – it’s definitely a rewarding job.
A standout memory is definitely Christmas time where residents and staff sit around the table enjoying Christmas dinner, everyone is enjoying the moment and the good food of course!
I was shocked when I was told – I thought they had the wrong person!
It’s a rewarding job, the team gets on well together and supports each other which is a bonus to any job. Northern Healthcare is dedicated to residents and their success in life.
