We spoke to our Training and Compliance Coordinator and Support Worker Champion, Patrice Mallon, to find out all about her role here at Northern Healthcare.
Patrice tells us how she began working at Northern Healthcare in 2019 as a Bank Support Worker, and how she progressed her way up to her current role as Training and Compliance Coordinator!
“I started working for Northern Healthcare in July 2019, since then I have been given the opportunity to undertake various roles. I started as a Bank Support Worker and then progressed to Occupational Therapy Assistant. Whilst undertaking these roles I was given the opportunity to apply and become the ‘Support Worker Champion’ for Northern Healthcare.
The Support Worker Champion initiative gives team members an opportunity to have their voices heard. I visit a different service each week and speak to staff members to see how they feel things are going currently at their unit and if there are any issues. We discuss how they are supported in their role, any concerns they may have, if they need greater support we will explore possible options, and these discussions are also a chance to ask any questions.
Alongside this, I identify what extra training staff feel that they would benefit from, and we assess the best method of delivering this training, which may include face-to-face, e-learning or a blend of both. All feedback collected is confidential and anonymised.
During my visits I will also make note of any compliments or examples of best practice seen across Northern Healthcare. After each visit I write a report based on the feedback received, which is confidentially fed back to Service Managers and our Directors so changes can be made if any are identified. Once this process is complete, we will let the team know any changes which have been implemented as a result.
Whilst working for Northern Healthcare I have been given the opportunity to develop and progress, working in a variety of roles within our services and now at Head Office as Training and Compliance Coordinator. This opportunity has allowed me to create additional training documents for staff across the services based on the feedback I receive as Support Worker Champion.
At NHC we base our approach to training upon staff needs and requests; working collaboratively to find a solution that works for all levels of training. Working both in our services, and now at Head Office, gives me valuable insights and I can incorporate these into our training initiatives. For example, we have now started adding learning resources onto Eirmed and created an ‘Eirmed Library’ for staff so they can access this information as and when they need – without the need to wait until refreshers are due.”
