Welcome Sarah Colling, People Director

What attracted you to apply to join the Northern Healthcare team?

“The team! Meeting our leaders and seeing how well aligned our values were, made me excited by the opportunity to join such a great organisation.”

For you, what makes the Health and Social Care sector so special?

“The people make the sector special. I have worked in the sector my whole adult life and knowing that you are a small part of enriching someone’s life has always meant so much to me. I have a passion for people and making the lives of those we care for as secure and happy as possible. To do this takes a team that have those that we care for at the heart of every decision that we make. It shouldn’t matter which department you work within, we are all there for our services and enriching the lives of the people.”

What are your main responsibilities within the team?

“To empower our Service Managers and people to be able to conduct their roles in the best possible way. We spend the majority of our time at work, and I want to ensure that our people are well cared for. You can’t pour from an empty cup, especially in such mentally demanding roles such as those within a service. I hope to support my team to drive great initiatives over the next 12 months and beyond.”

What do you hope to bring to your role?

“I hope to guide our future leaders through their careers, providing people with clear, supportive guidance and a friendly ear in times of need.”

What did you want to be growing up?

“An actress, being on the stage is in my blood however I wasn’t quite brave enough to take it all the way. My daughter has inherited the passion for the arts, so I now get to live it again through her!”

What was your first paying job?

“Aged 12 I had a paper round, £15 to deliver 300 papers. I think I did this once and then paid my little sister £5 to do it for me!”

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

“I am not very good at sitting still, I always have a list of things I want to get done that day. With two small children, running around after them takes up the majority of my time! For me, running, Pilates and anything wellness-related always keeps me grounded.”

If your life was a movie, what songs would be on the soundtrack?

“I have a very eclectic music taste, a little like life actually. I’d have a bit of 90’s pop and R&B for the early 90’s, Foo Fighters, Stereophonics and Snow Patrol for the 00’s with a sprinkling of McFly throughout the ages! I am a massive fan of musicals, so I’d have to get a few big show tunes in there for those important life moments.”

What/who inspires you?

“My mum. She has been a Nurse for the last 40+ years whilst bringing up two children. I come from a family of very strong females who always showed me not to be defined by a gender norm. I am inspired to show my children that with hard work, a kind heart and respect for others, you can reach your goals in life.”
