Mindful Things to Do in Spring

A peaceful springtime scene of fields in the sunshine, representing spring as a season of mindfulness.
“There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature—the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”
– Rachel Carson

Spring is nature’s way of showing us that transformation can be both powerful and beautiful. After months of grey skies and chilly mornings, the world around us begins to bloom, offering a fresh start and renewed energy. It’s a season that reminds us to embrace change, whether that means stepping outside our comfort zones, finally tackling the things we’ve been putting off all winter, or simply taking a moment to slow down, appreciate the present and be mindful.

At Northern Healthcare, we see this season as the perfect time for the people we support to take their next steps towards independence. Just as nature reawakens, spring gives us the motivation to try new things, build healthy habits, and embrace positive change.

Why Spring is the Perfect Time for Mindfulness

Mindfulness is all about staying present and connected with yourself, and there’s no better time to practise it. Spring is known as the season of renewal and growth, making it the perfect opportunity to engage in activities that encourage personal development, creativity, and connection.

Whether you’re setting new goals, focusing on self-improvement, or challenging yourself to try something you’ve been putting off, this season is all about letting go and breathing new life into everything from your environment to yourself.

Outdoor Activities for Mindfulness

The arrival of warmer weather means it’s time to get outside and take advantage of the energy that spring offers – even the least outdoorsy people can agree about that! Spending time in fresh air is an ideal way to practise mindfulness, and here are a couple of ways you can get started:

1. Take a Nature Walk or Hike
When we think of spring, we think of nature walks. Even if you don’t live near walking trails, a park or large patches of greenery, what matters is focusing on the sights, sounds, and smells around you and feeling what the fresh air does to your body.

2. Gardening or Planting
Spring is the season for growth, and what better way to connect with that energy than through gardening? Tending to plants is a wonderful, mindful activity that encourages patience and care while grounding you in the present moment.

3. Spring Cleaning and Decluttering
Spring cleaning may be addressing your overfilled kitchen cupboards and office drawers, but it can also be a chance to declutter your mind. In fact, it’s been scientifically proven that clutter can heighten our cortisol levels (aka the stress hormone), while on the other hand, having a clutter-free space can make us feel more positive. So, where do we begin when clutter feels so overwhelming? Start by letting go of things that no longer serve you, physically, digitally and emotionally. Each item you clear out can be symbolic of clearing out mental clutter as well.

Spring Cleaning for the Mind

– Unfollow Negative Influences. It’s no surprise that social media can have a huge impact on mental health, and knowing that 58% of adults who use social media say it harms their mental health almost feels like too low a percentage. With another 45% of people feeling overwhelmed by the amount of information they are fed in the never-ending scroll, it should be an incentive to unfollow accounts that make you feel anxious, insecure, or drained. Instead, fill your feed with positive, uplifting content that inspires and motivates you.

– Stay Hydrated and Active. Warmer weather is a great reminder to drink more water and move your body. Mindful changes like adding an extra glass of water to your daily routine or taking a short walk outside can boost your mental and physical well-being.

️- Spend Time in Sunshine. Natural sunlight is a powerful mood booster, and with more than 1 in 20 UK adults diagnosed with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), it’s important to spend at least a little time outdoors each day, whether it’s having your morning coffee al fresco or simply sitting by a window with the sun streaming in.

-️ Create a Bedtime Routine. Quality sleep is essential for our mental clarity and emotional health, so consider setting a bedtime routine that helps you unwind. This might include reading a book, journaling, or limiting screen time before bed.

– Declutter Your Space. You know the saying “tidy home, tidy mind”. Refresh your space by getting rid of things you no longer need, rearranging furniture, or adding small touches like fresh flowers to create a peaceful and uplifting atmosphere.

Creative and Reflective Activities

With spring comes an invitation to engage in mindful activities that challenge us to think differently, try something new, and develop ourselves. These can include:

4. Journaling or Writing
Reflecting on your thoughts and intentions for the season is a great way to get clear on what you want to achieve in the months ahead.

5. Try a New Creative Hobby
Spring is the perfect time to finally start that creative hobby you’ve been putting off. Whether it’s painting, photography, or learning an instrument, creativity brings a real sense of accomplishment. In fact, a recent UK study found that people who engage in arts and crafts are happier and more fulfilled, with some even comparing the satisfaction to being in employment. So, dust off your watercolours or pick up that old camera – expressing yourself can be a great way to reduce stress and boost well-being.

Social and Community Activities

Spring’s longer days and rising temperatures also encourage social activities and connection with others, an important aspect of mindfulness. So, why not:

6. Volunteer or Help Others
The feeling of contributing to your community is incredibly rewarding and uplifting. With evidence suggesting that acts of kindness can boost feelings of confidence, happiness and optimism as well as bring a sense of belonging, spring really is a great time to volunteer your time for a cause you care about.

7. Socialise and Connect with Friends
Spending time with others helps you stay present and grounded, and spring offers the perfect weather to connect with people and create memories outside. Picnic anyone?

Helping Others Take Their Next Steps

At Northern Healthcare, we recognise that spring is also a season of growth for the people we support. This time of year provides a perfect opportunity for individuals to make significant strides toward independent living. The vibrancy of the season motivates us all to push forward, take on new challenges, and celebrate progress. Our teams from Cumbria to the North West, Yorkshire to the Midlands are all dedicated to helping individuals build the confidence and skills needed for a successful future, offering tailored support and empowering those in our care to take ownership of their journey.

As we embrace the energy and potential of spring, we encourage everyone, whether in our care or within our communities, to reflect, engage in new activities, and set intentions for personal growth and transformation. The season offers countless opportunities for positive change, and we’re excited to help guide those in our care as they move toward a more independent and fulfilling life.
