Why Choose Supported Living?

Supported Living

Supported living provides refuge for those unable to cope at home, and is often a safe haven for individuals with a mental health diagnosis, learning disability or autism.

According to the Supported Housing Alliance, “Over 600,000 people rely on supported housing to provide a secure place to live and to offer appropriate care and support.”

There are many reasons why a person would choose this option and in this article, we’re going to explain what supported living is, the positives of choosing it, our offering, success stories and how to get in touch with our dedicated team.

What is supported living?

Supported living is housing designed to help people live as independently as possible.

Each person will have an individual tenancy which means they have their own home and can benefit from the independence that comes with that.

But, who can benefit from supported living? It’s often for individuals with a learning or physical disability, people recovering from brain injury, and those with mental health issues and autism.

The aim of supported living is always to help the people supported lead happy and fulfilling lives, while their care needs are met and upheld.

The positives of supported living

There are a number of benefits, including the following:

  1. Independence: supported living offers a great alternative to residential care as it provides greater independence for people. You are responsible for your finances, medication, and the upkeep of your space.
  2. Creativity and individuality: you can create a space that you love, and express yourself exactly how you want to with furnishings to suit your taste and personality.
  3. Tailored care and support: you have all the privacy and independence that you could want, alongside the support you need to develop your skills. What more could you want?
  4. A home tailored to your needs: supported living providers work very closely with developers to ensure that their services are fit for purpose and suited to those who will be housed there.
  5. Friendly support: the teams at a supported living service, such as Northern Healthcare, are trained to support you – you will have access to their care 24/7.
